Do not go more than 30 days without auto insurance. Basically, you cannot drive a car without insurance and if your insurance was canceled, the RMV will send you a letter to either get another insurance or to return the plates and the registration will be canceled. So do not let more than 30 days pass before you switch car insurance companies.

START SHOPPING AROUND- There are so many different car insurance companies that you can choose from. First, decide what coverage you want- basic or full and then start calling different places.

GET AN AUTO QUOTE- ask the company to give you a quote of how much your insurance will cost you. Most of them are yearly but some are for 6 months, for example GEICO. So write down each quote from each insurance company for the same coverage( tell them all the same thing).

DECIDE which company offers the best deal and go with it. Get the coverage and make sure that they send that information to your old insurance company and to the RMV electronically, so that they know that you are covered.

You can either pay it all at once or choose to have a payment plan option which is automatically deducted from your bank account. This way you won’t miss a payment and your insurance won’t be canceled and it is also more affordable than paying a large lump sum payment all at once.
