The drivers aged 17-29 often find themselves in a troubled sector where not one of the insurance companies gives them a good insurance deal. If we look into the reasons behind this common behaviour, we shall be able to find out the causes why the insurance sector is eyeing the younger drivers for higher insurance premiums if at all they oblige. It has been seen that younger drivers often engage in troubled practices such as that of drunken driving, over speeding as well as rash driving. Given this scenario, it looks justified as to why younger drivers are often charged more premiums. Can having safety features reduce your insurance premiums?

Dec 18

Lane departure warning. Adaptive cruise control. Blind spot monitoring. Adaptive braking. Self-parking. Driver alertness monitoring. Stability control. And more airbags than you can count.

Auto manufacturers are cramming more and more features into cars in the name of safety. People don’t turn off their cruise control in heavy traffic, so let’s put a cruise control in the car that will automatically slow down when the car catches up to the car ahead. Apparently, drivers couldn’t be bothered to turn and look in the blind spot anymore, so now our cars will do that for us. And hey, if the car ahead of me stops and I’m not paying attention, my car will brake for me — all in the name of safety.

By taking more and more responsibility for driving away from the driver, is technology really making us safer?

Progressive Auto Insurance Tracks Drivers

Dec 14

An innovative new device can help drivers get cheap car insurance.  Jolie O’Dell’s article “Insurance Company Tracks Driver Responsibility With In-Car Device” on Yahoo!News describes the “Snapshot” program.  The device plugs into cars to track the responsibility of drivers.  If it shows that you are responsible, you can get up to 30% off of your car insurance premium.  Progressive auto insurance is offering this device in New York right now, but hopes to bring the program to other states soon.

Progressive monitors drivers for 30 days with the small device that plugs right into the diagnostic port in your car.  The “Snapshot” tracks what time of day you drive, how frequently you drive, if you make sudden stops, and other driving behaviors.  Drivers who drive less often or during the least busy driving times will get larger discounts off their car insurance premiums.  There is no GPS with the device so drivers don’t have to worry about being tracked or losing privacy.  This high-tech device may be used by other insurance companies in the future.

Cold Front Demanding Insurance Holders to Take Precautions

Dec 12

The winter weather is just not the right time for the drivers and neither for the insurance companies in UK. With it snowing for the major part of the season, it is difficult to ignore the subtle realities that come to the crust. In a recent data released by the AA, it has been seen that there has been an appalling increase in the breakdown callouts by the motorists in a span of last few days. Just the AA alone received as much as 25,000 callouts on the beginning day of the last week, which rendered it to consider the day as the busiest day for the month for the recovery firm. Similarly, for the last week of November, there were more than 100,000 callouts received with many hundreds of customers left stranded in various parts of UK for several hours.

It has been noted that there have been more calls even in the morning hours even it can clearly be seen that evenings would pose the majority of the problem.

Rear view cameras to be made compulsory for cars by 2014

Dec 08

Auto manufactures will be required to install the rear-view cameras in all new vehicles in 2014.  The federal government has announced this plan on Friday and has received strong support from insurance companies as well as the other analysts and in all likelihood will be able to garner support from auto manufacturers as well.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood was quoted as saying that there could not be anything more tragic for a parent or a caregiver to accidently injure or kill a child who is playing behind the motor vehicle.  These incidents occur while backing out a vehicle from the garage or a driveway as these are blind zones behind the vehicle.  With the installation of the rear-view cameras, the drivers will be able to see if they can safely back up a vehicle.

As per the estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there is an average of 292 fatalities as well as 18,000 injuries that occur each year due to back-over crashes.  The most common victims were the children and the elderly.  Around 44% of these fatalities were children and 33% were senior citizens.

The NHTSA stated that this proposal will not only bring down these incidents but also running over pedestrians and bumping into vehicles and barricades in parking lots.  With the installation of the camera, motorists will be able to clearly view all that is going on behind them through the video display on their dashboards.  An alarm or a bell would go off if there is anything within that field of view of the camera.  This would enable in alerting the driver and thereby avoid such instances.

These features are usually expensive to install but the price is likely to come down.  With all the technological advances, there should be no room for errors such as these as they are really tragic incidents and should be avoided when there are systems in place already.

Auto manufacturers will endorse some aspects of this proposal for sure, stated Gloria Bergquist, Vice President, Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.  Protecting children and the elderly was their prime concern and they would decide on the options that they would want to support, she said.

A copy of this proposal has been sent to the engineering staff that belongs to the manufacturer’s alliance and they have already started reviewing it.  The public will have 60 days to make their comments.

Drive Less to Lower Your Insurance Premiums

Dec 08

The best way to handle a rising insurance premium is by making sure that you are using less of your car for commuting purposes- that is what the insurance experts have been propagating this winter. If you compare car insurance, you will find that people who use their cars on occasional purposes can save as much as thirty percent on their insurance premiums. It should be understood that lesser is your driving mileage, the better is the insurance deal that you get from your insurance company. Given the current downturn within the insurance sector, the best to make sure that you have a genuine-priced insurance premium is by driving less often.

Insurance companies do not appreciate much of driving at night hours as well for the people who have a huge mile driving history behind them.
