Driving to a different beat

Aug 26

We’re all into different types of music – you might enjoy rocking away on your trusty old air guitar to a bit of AC/DC, while I might prefer singing along to Jedward’s latest musical ‘creation’. I said might. Maybe you’re even that rarest of creatures – an Enya fan. But what you probably didn’t realise is that different music genres can affect the way you drive

A recent study by Halfords found that playing calming music prevents blood pressure from rising and encourages more considerate drivers. So how about swapping your Guns N’ Roses CD with something a little more chilled out like Adele.

Nine out of 10 drivers admit that playing music in the car has an effect on their mood and behaviour behind the wheel, with 60 percent saying it makes them happier and more considerate motorists.

However, some 15 percent of drivers admitted that their choice of music makes them drive faster and 5 percent said it made them more aggressive. This change in be

COBRA Subsidies Coming To An End

Aug 26

The recent stock market turmoil has brought back memories of the fall of 2008, and the government stimulus package that followed.  One of the provisions of the stimulus package was a program to subsidize COBRA premiums for people who lost their jobs in the wake of the recession.  The subsidy program was extended to help people who were involuntarily terminated on or before May 31, 2010, and allowed them to receive up to 15 months of COBRA premium assistance.  For most people who qualified for the subsidies, the 15 months has already ended.  But for the last people who qualified those who were laid off in the final days of May, 2010 the 15 months of premium assistance will come to an end next week.

Unfortunately, unemployment numbers are still pretty grim in the US.  Ba

Some, for example, will cut premium costs if you are an active member of your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Why does this matter to insurers and how can you get money off your policies?

These schemes are set up by groups of local residents with the aim of making their neighbourhoods safer and minimising incidents such as theft, vandalism and general crime. Working in partnership with the police and local councils, each group of volunteers will look after a specific area.

Will Driver-less Cars Carry Insurance?

Aug 24

The future of cars may well be in artificial intelligence software that takes driver error out of the the accident equation. Will these new cars need auto insurance? While the number of accidents may be drastically reduced, accidents will still occur due to mechanical failure or problems with AI software. Auto insurance will still be needed in a driver-less world, but determining rates will be problematic for insurers.

Determining Risk

Risk is usually calculated based on a drivers record, the safety features on the car and other statistical probabilities. Since driver-less cars have no record and no statistics, insurers may have some difficulty calculating risk and setting rates. A spokesman for State Farm Insurance has stated that the company will insure driver-less vehicles when they become legal on American roadways.
