What to Look for when Test Driving a new Car

Jan 19

While a test drive was once the ultimate method for checking the condition of a used car, technology in newer models has made a test drive a less reliable indicator of car problems. Smart consumers should have any used car they are considering checked by their mechanic for potential problems. They can also make use of Car Fax reports which track car titles to let buyers know if the car was involved in an accident, flood or suffered other damage.

Taking the Car for a Spin

Whether an individual is buying a new or used car they should take the car for a test drive to see if it is comfortable to drive and if it handles well. Drivers come in different shapes and sizes and while a car may suit a 55 tall woman, it may not be comfortable for her 62” tall husband. Look at control panels to see if displays are easy to read and understand, and check settings for seats, the steering wheel and controls, even the A/C and heat, for accessibility and comfort.

Make a Checklist

Unless an individual is a mechanic or professional driver who knows exactly what to look for during a test drive, he or whe should make a list of problems which could be a red flag on the sale. Engine noises may or may not signal an expensive repair, but if an automatic transmission hesitates as it shifts, it almost certainly will need work in the near future. Newer model cars often have digital readouts that tell owners when to change the oil and when they need fuel. Some also identify problems that require repair.

Check Handling

When conducting a test drive it is a good idea to take the car to an empty parking lot or other area where the driver can check the turning radius of the vehicle and slam on the brakes to see how quickly the car stops. Rapid acceleration is another point that should be checked since it is important for most drivers who spend any time on highways. The stability of the vehicle is a consideration because older model SUVs can be top heavy which makes them difficult to drive safely.

Does Everything Work?

Cars today have lots of buttons and controls many of which contribute to both the comfort and the safety of the vehicle. Check all the functions like windshield wipers and washers, defrosters, heaters and A/C, navigation systems, controls for sun or moon roofs, and cruise control. All the lights should be checked including the blinkers, hazards, head and tailights and brake lights since malfunctioning lights have to be fixed immediately to keep the car legal.

Since new cars have warranties and rarely have mechanical problems, the test drive is mostly to check comfort and handling. While the test drive may reveal some problems with a used car, the best bet for consumers is to have the car checked by a reputable mechanic and get a Car Fax report to avoid buying a lemon. Always keep the report since it can help verify the value of the used car by showing the mileage is accurate and the car has never been damaged.

Easy Car Insurance Claims

According to the 2009 statistics on accidents, around 163,554 road collisions involve personal injuries. If you were injured in the accident due to other driver’s carelessness, you are liable to claim compensation for your injuries.

Most commonly, the accidents cause neck injuries affecting soft tissues of the neck. These injuries are also known as whiplash injuries. Such whiplash injuries last for few days but sometimes might last longer affecting body and neck permanently.

Safety Features Can Add Savings to Car Insurance Premiums

Apr 05

The world has become a very unsafe place. Many people are involved in car accidents every day in the United States. This is because Americans are always in a hurry and often are running late so they drive over the speed limit and end up causing car accidents to occur. Often drivers become distracted by ringing cell phones, songs on the radio, and people talking to them in the passenger seat which leads to serious accidents.

Many states now have laws that ban texting or talking on the phone while driving. However, many drivers now use Bluetooth devices which free up their hands and are legal but can still distract the driver. Cars are made safer now than they were forty or fifty years ago.

What if you have to evacuate and leave a car behind to face nature’s fury? Are you covered?

Another police car rolls down the street, urging you to evacuate. You have loaded all the vital papers and family pictures into the van, and your wife is in the passenger seat urging the kids to buckle up. Holiday shopping season a smashing success for car prowlers.

Jan 10

I went to a local “Black Friday” shopping event for a great buy on a trampoline. I don’t care how much money I could save on a Christmas gift, I will never, ever, go through that again! However, thousands and thousands of shoppers will spend the next few weeks searching for the perfect gifts, and thousands and thousands of thieves will spend the next few weeks breaking into cars to steal them. ‘Tis the season, indeed.

Christmas gifts left in cars are easy pickings for car prowlers. Shoppers often drop packages off in the car, and return to the mall to continue shopping or have lunch. It only takes a few seconds for a thief to make off with a morning’s shopping haul.

Plan to protect your car and loot

You can avoid this problem with a little planning:

  • See if the stores you shop in will hold your purchases for you, then pick everything up at one time when your shopping day is over.

Deer Effect State Farm Car Insurance

Nov 08

The cost of those seemingly cute, cuddly deer out in the streets is actually more than you might imagine.  Not only do they eat plants and crops, they can carry lyme disease and wreak havoc on your car insurance.  Allan Sloan’s Fortune article on CNN Money discusses the financial impact of what he calls “rats with hooves.”  That may be a bit harsh, but “The case against Bambi” has valid financial points.

State Farm car insurance says that 1.14 million accidents between deer and cars occurred in a one year time frame ending this June.  That cost drivers and insurance companies close to $4 billion in damages.  And if you include the accidents where drivers didn’t have any car insurance or comprehensive coverage, the cost of damages is even higher.  In the past five years the number of deer related crashes has increased by 21%, while the number of miles people are driving only went up by 2%.  The likely cause of that statistic is that there are a lot more deer out on the roads than there were five years ago.

The worst part is that deer are causing human fatalities in car crashes.  It is estimated that 140 people were killed just last year because of deer-vehicle accidents.  The top five states where accidents occurred were Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Virginia.  The fewest accidents were in Rhode Island, Alaska, Nevada, the District of Columbia, and Hawaii.  With fatalities and skyrocketing costs associated with deer-vehicle collisions, the author ponders whether eliminating some deer for the greater good of humans is the next step.
